May I trouble you to look at the
enclosed documents relating to the re-establish- ment of the Hong Kong University? They consist of a copy of the report of the Committee, which was set up at the end of 1945 to advise on
whether or not the University as such should
continue to exist and if so the policy which
tinue
should govern its resuscitation, and a copy
of a memorandum which was subsequently prepared
in this Department on the subject and ich Agen agreed to by the Foreign Office.
You will see that the memorandum
summarises the results of the consideration
which was given to the future of the Hong Kong
University in 1939, prior to the outbreak of the War, and then proceeds to discuss the main recommendation of the Committee, namely, that the University should be re-established as soon
as possible on a firm financial basis with staff and facilities adequate to make it fully capable of reaching British academic standards and becoming an effective centre for Sino-
British contact in the sphere of learning.
